Michael Stein is a nationally renowned author and Internet strategist with 15 years of experience working with nonprofits, foundations, labor unions, technology providers and social enterprises.

He is the co-author of three books about the Internet, including: The eNonprofit: A Guide to ASPs, Internet Services and Online Software, with John Kenyon, published by CompassPoint Nonprofit Services. (Jan 2002.)

In 1997, he co-authored Fundraising on the Internet: Recruiting and Renewing Donors Online, with Nick Allen and Mal Warwick.

He was formerly on the staff of GetActive Software in Berkeley, California, where he produced marketing content such as case studies, press releases, white papers, articles in the nonprofit press, listserv postings, and blog entries.

He was formerly the Associate Director of Groundspring.org, the nonprofit Internet software provider and training agency serving small and mid-size nonprofits, based in the Presidio National Park in San Francisco.

Michael's Internet projects and clients have included: Planned Parenthood Federation of America, United Nations Food Programme, SEIU, TechSoup.org, The McKay Foundation, Packard Foundation, Network for Good, GetActive Software, Opportunity Knocks, Carnegie Corporation of New York, California Labor Federation, Donordigital, Campaign for College Opportunity, Campaign for Mental Health, North Carolina Conservation Network, National Alliance for Choice in Giving, Children Now and The DataCenter.

Michael serves on the Board of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Golden Gate Chapter.

Michael serves on a number of advisory boards, including: CorpWatch.org, Pedro Point Surf Club, Craigslist Foundation, and the American Lung Association of California.

His opinion and analysis have been featured in numerous media, including: The New York Times, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, San Jose Mercury News, National Public Radio, Quicken Money Reports, Philanthropy Journal, Wired News, TechSoup.org, The Industry Standard, Office.com and The Nonprofit Quarterly.

He is a frequent speaker at nonprofit conferences and workshops.  He is certified as an ePhilanthropy Master Trainer (ePMT) by The ePhilanthropy Foundation.

Michael is an avid longboard surfer and calls Pacifica State Beach his local break. He is a member of the Pedro Point Surf Club.

He grew up in France, England and Denmark, and now resides in Berkeley, California with his wife and two children.
