Berkeley's Tilden Park merry-go-round reopening

Carousel After an eight-month restoration, the wonderful and unique Tilden Park carousel in the Berkeley hills has reopened after a $700,000 renovation. To protect the carousel, which some collectors reckon is valued at nearly $2.5 million, a weather-proof enclosure was built. The new doors and windows around the carousel slide open, kind of like a convertible, for when the weather is better. That will make things much cozier during the holidays when visitors go up to visit the Tilden Park Christmas tree next to the carousel.  Built in 1911, the carousel is nearing the 100-year mark. About 150,000 visitors ride the Tilden Park carousel every year.

So Young, and So Gadgeted

12basics190 Everyone knows that babies crawl before they walk, and that tricycles come before two-wheelers. But at what age should children get their first cellphone, laptop or virtual persona?  These are new questions being faced by 21st-century parents, and there is no wisdom from the generations for guidance. You can’t exactly say to your teenager, “When I was a boy, I didn’t have an unlimited texting plan until I was in high school.”
